“I Come from Spain”
Teresa Berganza, guest professor
Mª de los Ángeles Gómez Rojas, student
Duncan Gifford, accompanying pianist
Professor Berganza notes at the outset that one should not slow down every time “I Come from Spain” is sung, and that what follows should be sung more softly so that it comes across more clearly. She also recommends clarifying the embellishments: they should be kept placed at the level of the upper lip, neither lowered into the throat nor raised any higher.
Another instruction Teresa Berganza gives concerns not stopping the music in the middle of a phrase; the text must lead. They also address the importance of attention to the text in relation to musical inflections. Finally, the professor advises the student to remain within bel canto and not take on dramatic roles so as not to spoil her very beautiful voice type.
