Course
2003-04

PUCCINI, Giacomo

La bohème

“Mi chiamano Mimì”

Tom Krause, professor

Iwona Sobotka, student

Madalit Lamazares, accompanying pianist

Professor Krause comments to the student that very pronounced portamentos should be avoided, and explains that the aria’s pianissimos are entirely intentional due to the text. Towards the end, the last note should not be lengthened, but released gently. He advises her not to start her daily study with this aria. Krause explains how to place the sound before emitting it, always relaxing and smiling, and they work on it for several minutes. You should never force it; you must be aware of the emotion and let it come out freely. To finish, they work on the placement of the final phrases.
