TCHAIKOVSKY, Pyotr Ilyich
Variations on a Rococo Theme for Cello and Orchestra in A major, op. 33 (reduction for cello and piano)
Torleif Thedéen, visiting professor
Lizi Ramishvili, student
Miguel Ángel Ortega Chavaldas, accompanying pianist
At the beginning, Thedéen congratulates the student on her performance. He advises her to play as naturally as possible, maintaining expression but without straining any muscles. Sometimes impulses break the breath of the music, which is why it is necessary to control them. Professor Thedéen also comments on aspects of the articulation of specific notes in the phrase. This is music full of balance, and this is what the performer should look for in each note, as well as the quality of the sound. Although the general musical idea is well established, it is advisable to take care of every detail.
Thedéen talks about the anacrusis of Variation I and about the technical passages, and explains how to improve them. Finally, he highlights the importance of the connection between notes within the phrase and relaxation as fundamental aspects of sound production, compatible with expression.
