SCHUMANN, Robert
String Quartet in A major, Op. 41 No. 3
I. Andante espressivo – Allegro molto moderato
Valentin Erben, guest professor
Albéniz Prosegur Quartet
Alma Olite, violin
Nelly Karina Guevara Chacón, violin
Hindenburg Leka, viola
Pablo Ferrández Castro, cello
In a way, the character of this movement is a bit schizophrenic, and it is important to note this restlessness in the cello’s syncopations. The syncopations must be felt, the beats must not be counted, and they compare different ways of phrasing them. Erben comments on the way pianists play certain chords, which they do not make completely vertical so that it sounds more fluid, and the same has to be true in certain passages of the quartet. Violin II needs more definition in the left hand. Professor Erben speaks a lot about expression, and considers that all elements must be done in a natural, organic way, that they are inherent to the music.
