KOUSSEVITZKY, Sergey
Concerto for Double Bass and Orchestra in F-sharp minor, Op. 3 (reduction for double bass and piano)
I. Allegro
Wies De Boevé, visiting professor
David Tinoco Cacho, student
Jesús Gómez Madrigal, accompanying pianist
Professor De Boevé mentions Koussevitzky’s recordings playing his own works and specifically recommends that the student listen to the recording of this Concerto.
He also makes some indications regarding character, vibrato, attention to harmony, and how to interpret the character of the syncopations with great intensity and maintaining the tension (as if he were describing a sunrise).
In addition, the professor explains by playing how to achieve a better sound in a certain chromatic passage. In the alla breve part, the student has to think in 2 and not 4 parts, looking for a different color – a simpler and more relaxed sound – and paying attention to the anacruses. The professor also recommends that the student not look at his fingers to find the position on the string since he does not need to. He also proposes some specific fingerings, articulations, strokes, and bow directions.
