VANHAL, Johann Baptist
Concerto for Double Bass and Orchestra in D major (reduction for double bass and piano)
I. Allegro moderato
Wies De Boevé, visiting professor
Sofía Bianchi Maestre, student
Jesús Gómez Madrigal, accompanying pianist
The master class focuses on the quality of sound, and the professor insists on the importance of studying the manuscript and seeing the annotations on octaves written in a certain passage, among other issues. There are many corrections on the score regarding different articulations – Wies de Bouvé compares a passage with a similar one by Dittersdorff – and also relating to the original bows, melodic leaps and expressiveness.
The resonance of the strings and chords is paramount in this music, and the key to achieving this resonance lies in creating a “resonant” character: the professor makes a comparison between how a violinist plays and what the character is like at certain moments. They also work on the movements and speed of the bow, as well as on the point of contact in specific passages.
