Zubin Mehta: Mozart – Violin concerto no. 5 K 219 – I. Allegro aperto

Course
2015-16

MOZART, Wolfgang Amadeus

Concerto for Violin and Orchestra No. 5 in A major K 219

I. Allegro aperto

Zubin Mehta, guest conductor

Ellinor D’Melon Moraguez, violin

Freixenet Symphony Orchestra of the Reina Sofía School of Music

The first thing Maestro Mehta indicates is that they should not play so forte, it is mezzoforte because they are performing Mozart and it is a small orchestra. He also makes indications of character regarding the tempo: dolce and elegant. He corrects the last phrase of the orchestra before the soloist enters, it must end “quasi diminuendo” and they repeat it several times. The maestro insists that the orchestra is playing too loudly. For Zubin Mehta, three cellos are enough for this piece. At a certain point, he also asks that only one horn play, not two, because what he seeks is for the orchestra to sound more piano. Afterwards, the maestro asks the soloist to turn more towards the audience.
Mehta reiterates that in the soloist’s entrances, the orchestra must diminish. And the ending is like a question that remains floating in the air.
