The first double bass ensemble of the Reina Sofía School of Music was formed in 1993 under the tutelage of Maestro Ludwig Streicher, who was the Head Professor of the Double Bass Department from its founding in the academic year 1991-1992 until 2000-2001. From that academic year onwards, he was succeeded by Maestro Rainer Zepperitz, who demonstrated an identical interest in ensemble music practice.
To consolidate the development of this chamber music activity, the department includes the Dittersdorf Double Bass Trio of Unidad Editorial, created in the academic year 2009-2010 by the then-professor of the department, Duncan McTier.
Throughout its artistic career, the trio has performed in venues such as the Niño Jesús University Children’s Hospital in Madrid for a Carolina Foundation concert, the National Auditorium of Music in Madrid (as part of the “Santander Bank Foundation Concerts for Schools” Series and “Four Double Basses and One Who Isn’t”), the ABC Museum of Drawing and Illustration (Entre Notas Series), and the Príncipe de Asturias Hall of Euroforum Felipe II, in San Lorenzo de El Escorial.
Currently, the group studies under the tutelage of Antonio Araque, and its members—all students of the department’s head, Professor Wies de Boevé—are Johan Reyes, Thomas Francis Mahoney, Alessandro Spada, and Manuel Peirón.
