Madrid, June 22, 2020.- Since last March, in compliance with the measures established to combat COVID-19, the Reina Sofía School of Music suspended all its face-to-face activities.
With the aim of celebrating ensemble music again and expressing the importance of music and all culture in the task of rebuilding society, live music will return to the School Auditorium next Friday, June 26, at 7:00 p.m.
The protagonists will be the conductor Pablo González, the Freixenet Chamber Orchestra of the School and the viola Raquel de Benito as soloist. The aforementioned orchestral formation will be made up of 26 student and former student musicians from the School and invited students from the Real Conservatorio Superior de Música de Madrid.
The concert can be enjoyed live and free of charge through the School’s YouTube channel.
Programme
Paul Hindemith (1895-1963) Trauermusik for viola and string orchestra
Béla Bartók (1881-1945) Divertimento for string orchestra Sz.113 BB.118
Wolfgang A. Mozart (1756-1791) Symphony No. 29 in A major, K. 201/186a
Hindemith’s Trauermusik (Funeral Music) opens the program for two very different reasons. Its melancholic nature allows us to pay tribute to the victims of the pandemic and, at the same time, its status as a great masterpiece invites us to celebrate how wonderful music is and its ability to unite people. One of the School’s most outstanding musicians, the viola Raquel de Benito, will perform as a soloist.
Béla Bartók’s Divertimento is a luminous work, a divertimento that begins and ends with the air of dance.
And, finally, Symphony No. 29 of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, which, in the words of Robbins Landon, a great expert on the subject: «is the crowning achievement of his early symphonies» with a rhythmic and expressive power that attracts from the first bars.
In addition to this concert, the School continues to offer the public free audiovisual content on its digital channels. The School Channel, integrated into its website, has more than 500 videos of concerts and master classes and its YouTube channel hosts interviews with the great artists who visit the School, musical appreciation workshops and other content.
