Midday Suite

Closeness and conversation define the Suite de Mediodía sessions, which include the 21st-Century Soloists concerts.

Like the different dances that make up the Baroque suite, each session consists of several moments: guided tours of the School, an introductory talk on the programme, the 21st-Century Soloists concert as the central focus and, to conclude, a conversation with the musicians.

With two series each year—autumn and spring—and live broadcast on Radio Clásica, this cycle celebrates the excellence of the new generations of soloists in a fresh, accessible and inspiring format. Additionally, attendees at the Sony Auditorium can enjoy the live broadcast commentary.

In collaboration with Radio Clásica, the Reina Sofía School of Music continues with a new edition of the 21st-Century Soloists series, the backbone of the Suite de Mediodía experience, which will offer the public the opportunity to attend a programme of themed concerts, take part in guided tours of the School, and meet the participating musicians.

During the spring series, you will be able to enjoy the following concerts and activities:

April 11

11:45 AM Spanish Song: Tribute to Manuel de Falla

Centered around the figure of Manuel de Falla, this program explores the tradition of Spanish song through different perspectives and generations.

Falla’s own songs engage in dialogue with works by composers from his circle and his legacy, creating a panorama where voice and piano become a meeting point between the popular and the cultivated, between tradition and modernity.

A journey through one of the most representative repertoires of Spanish music, where Falla’s heritage continues to project its influence strongly into the present.

11:45 AM Piano Virtuosity: From Beethoven to Balakirev

From Beethoven to Balakirev, this program explores different conceptions of piano virtuosity throughout the 19th century.

Beethoven’s works position the piano as an instrument of structural depth and expression, while the subsequent repertoire expands its technical and sonic possibilities toward an increasingly expansive and demanding style of writing.

In this journey, the evolution of piano language is manifested both in formal construction and in the exploration of new expressive limits, culminating in the Romantic-rooted virtuosity represented by Balakirev.
