Miriam Fried: Sibelius - Violin concerto op 47 - I. Allegro moderato

SIBELIUS, Jean

Concerto for violin and orchestra in D minor op. 47 (violin and piano reduction)

I. Allegro moderato

Miriam Fried, guest professor

Rolanda Ginkute, student

Vadim Gladkov, accompanying pianist

Professor Fried comments the powerful performance of the student but the convenience of focussing on all the specific possibilities of the violin: color and expression.
They analyse the beginning of the piece and how the sound has to respond to every dynamic and harmonic details because those first notes create the character. What it is very important is to create a personal image of the piece.
She also talks about bow speed, what conforms the flow in music, and the way to hold the violin.
All the expressive aspects should be organic and proportional to the previous and posterior passages.
The solo part has to follow the orchestra to get the correct character. So it is very important to know and work on the general score.
Fried comments some aspects of Sibelius' life and compositional procedures.
They work on vibrato, quick passages, pressure and weight, phrasing and expressivity.
Finally, Fried insists on the idea of having a general vision of the work and the importance of developing the tools that will take us to reach our idea.
