The Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Orchestral Conducting Studies, designed by the School, is analogous to the Degree but without official recognition.

Content

The Conducting Department of the Reina Sofía School of Music offers a unique academic program that grants a Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Studies of Orchestra Conducting. The department is led by Nicolás Pasquet, with the collaboration of Jordi Francés and Miguel Ángel García Cañamero as associate professors.

To access the program, a previous Bachelor’s degree in Orchestral Conducting is required, and having completed a Master’s degree will be positively valued. In some exceptional cases, the panel may invite candidates who do not meet these requirements to audition. The duration of the program varies according to the student’s profile, being from 1 to 2 years. Our priority is to provide an enriching and close educational experience, so the number of students will be limited to 4.

The practical approach is one of the fundamental pillars of our program. Students will have the unique opportunity to collaborate with prestigious Spanish and European orchestras, immersing themselves in a fully professional environment. The collaborating orchestras include the Orquesta de Extremadura, the Orquesta de Navarra, the Orquesta Sinfónica de Castilla y León, the Orquesta de Córdoba, the Orquesta Sinfónica de Bilbao, the Euskadiko Orkestra, the Filharmonie Hradec Králové and the Anhaltische Philharmonie Dessau.

We will continue to expand our alliances to offer, from our first academic year, a level of direct student-orchestra contact at the highest international level, since immersion in orchestral practice will allow our students to acquire the valuable experience that will enhance their skills and knowledge in the art of conducting.

At the Reina Sofía School of Music, we pride ourselves on providing education at the highest level, with a unique focus on the professional and artistic development of our students. Below, we offer more detailed information about the study program.

Duration
The duration of the Diploma in Performance/Composition is a minimum of one year and a maximum of 4 (renewable each year). This extension will be endorsed or canceled annually based on the student’s progress and their contribution to the artistic life of the School, with the decision being resolved in the faculty meeting of the 2nd quarter.
It is offered to candidates over 18 years of age who prefer a less regulated option, seeking greater flexibility in their study plan than in the Official Higher and Master’s Degrees, as this title has a more practical/professional character.
Students are expected to participate in all orchestra projects, chamber groups and any other activity programmed by the School for their benefit. Absence without justified permission could jeopardise their continuity at the School.
Entry into the Diploma in Performance/Composition does not guarantee automatic progression to any other program of the School. Progression to the official Higher or Master’s Degree program will be carried out exclusively through the annual audition process, submitting an application in the ordinary way.
