Born in Switzerland, Brönnimann trained at the Basel Music Academy and the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, where he was appointed Visiting Professor of Conducting. Between 2008 and 2012, he was Music Director of the National Symphony Orchestra of Colombia in Bogotá. In January 2015, he was appointed Principal Conductor of the Orquestra Sinfónica do Porto Casa da Música, after a long relationship with the orchestra, and since September 2016, he has been Principal Conductor of the Basel Sinfonietta. He has worked with composers such as John Adams, Saariaho, Birtwistle, Chin, Adès, and orchestras such as the Oslo Philharmonic, the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, the Britten Sinfonia, the Philharmonia Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Copenhagen Philharmonic, and the Seoul Philharmonic. As for his operatic projects, he has worked at the English National Opera (ENO), the Norwegian Opera, the Bergen International Festival, and the Theater an der Wien, as well as at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, where he has conducted Schoenberg’s Erwartung, Szymanowski’s Hagith, and Lachenmamm’s The Little Match Girl.
