Born in Madrid in 1964, David del Puerto trained as a composer under the tutelage of Francisco Guerrero and Luis de Pablo. With just over 20 years of age, he stood out for his creations at the Almeida Festival in London and shortly after, he was commissioned by Pierre Boulez to write a new work for the Ensemble InterContemporain.

In 1993 he received the Gaudeamus Prize with his “Concerto for Oboe and Chamber Ensemble” and the El Ojo Crítico Prize from Radio Nacional de España. In 2005 he obtained the National Music Prize for his first symphony, “Boreas”.

His music has been played by ensembles such as Nieuw Ensemble, London Sinfonietta, Orchestre Symphonique du Rhin-Mulhouse, Orchestra and Choir of the Community of Madrid, RTVE Orchestra, National Youth Orchestra of Spain, Symphony Orchestra of Galicia, Royal Philharmonic of Galicia, Cadaqués Orchestra, Plural Ensemble, Grup Instrumental de Valencia, Taller Sonoro, New Paths Ensemble or the Casals Quartet, among others.

Soloists such as Ernest Rombout, Ananda Sukarlan, Miquel Bernat, Ángel Luis Castaño, Manuel Guillén or Sarah Leonard, and conductors such as Ed Spanjaard, Sakari Oramo, Diego Masson, Luca Pfaff, David Miller, José Ramón Encinar, Pablo González, Josep Pons, Pedro Halffter, Fabián Panisello, Tapio Tuomela or Pablo Heras have performed his work.

In 2008 he founded the ensemble “Rejoice!” with the soprano Carmen Gurriarán and the accordionist Ángel Luís Castaño and is also a founding member of the musicians’ collective “Música Presente”. He has also published articles and interviews in numerous specialized publications and in the main national newspapers.

As a soloist and performer of his own music, he has performed with ensembles such as the Cadaqués Orchestra or the Plural Ensemble, among others. In addition, he has developed an intense teaching activity as a guest professor at universities, conservatories and courses in Europe and the United States. He is currently a professor of Analysis and Musical Forms at the Reina Sofía School of Music in Madrid.
