The sound of the English horn has been familiar to him since his earliest childhood: his father played the English horn in the Bavarian State Orchestra. However, Dominik Wollenweber took the long route before deciding on this instrument. First, he played the flute, and at the age of 14, he began with the oboe under the tutelage of Hagen Wangenheim at the Munich School of Music, as well as Simon Dent at the Richard Strauss Conservatory.
He made his first contacts with the Berlin Philharmonic through a scholarship with the Academy of his orchestra, where he studied between 1991 and 1993 with Hansjörg Schellenberger. During this period, Wollenweber was principal oboist of the Youth Orchestra of the European Union, conducted by Claudio Abbado. After applying for several oboe positions, he auditioned for the Berlin Philharmonic and succeeded in passing.
