Born in Basel, he trained with Gerhard Hildenbrand, Peter-Lukas Graf, and Aurèle Nicolet. Likewise, his work with Heinz Holliger profoundly marked his musical career.
He was principal flute of the St. Gallen Symphony Orchestra and has performed with orchestras such as the Lucerne Festival Orchestra, the Gulbenkian Orchestra of Lisbon, and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, as well as with the Ensemble Contrechamps, the Holliger Wind Quintet, and Nova Stravaganza. He has recorded for radio and in CD format for labels such as Philips, Koch International, Accord, Stradivarius, and Discover. In 1994, he succeeded Peter-Lukas Graf at the Musikhochschule Basel, where he currently continues as a flute professor, and between 2004 and 2014 he was a professor at the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg. Since 1999, he has also been artistic director of the “Swiss Chamber Concerts” cycle in Switzerland.
