Born in Madrid, Helena Poggio trained at the Reina Sofía School of Music under the tutelage of Frans Helmerson. There, she received the Diploma for Most Outstanding Student in her professorship from Her Majesty Queen Sofía for two consecutive years, while also completing her degree with an Extraordinary End-of-Degree Award. She expanded her studies in the USA with an Artist Diploma at Bloomington, Indiana University, and a Master of Music at the Juilliard School in New York. She received classes from N. Shakhovskaya, J. Starker, B. Pergamenchikov, D. Geringas, and B. Greenhouse, among others. She has obtained first prizes in various national and international competitions in Spain, Portugal, and the United States.She maintains an intense artistic activity as a cellist with the Quiroga Quartet, National Music Prize 2018, performing concerts in the most important venues on the international scene: Wigmore Hall in London, Lincoln Center in New York, Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, National Auditorium, Philarmonie Berlin, Washington National Gallery, etc., and shares the stage with musicians of the stature of Martha Argerich, Javier Perianes, Veronika Hagen, Valentin Erben, Antje Weithaas, and Jörg Widmann, among others. She has recorded six albums that have received the applause of specialized international critics, with the Quiroga Quartet being considered one of the most dynamic, audacious, and innovative groups of the new European generation.Chamber music has always been her passion, and she firmly believes that it is one of the most powerful ways to communicate, learn, and share music, whether with the public, with other artists, or through teaching, a facet she has cultivated for more than a decade at the Aragón Higher Conservatory of Music. Her quartet professors R. Schmidt, W. Levin, and H. Beyerle have profoundly influenced her way of
understanding music.
She has been a member of the jury of the Bordeaux International String Quartet Competition, the Piero Farulli International Competition for Young String Quartets, and the Permanent Competition of Musical Youth of Spain. A Fulbright scholar, she has always combined teaching with her artistic activity, and since 2019, she has been Professor of Chamber Music by competitive examination at the Royal Higher Conservatory of Music of Madrid.
