The violist of Hungarian origin, Máté Szűcs, was principal viola of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra between 2011 and 2018. Máté was 17 years old when he exchanged the violin for the viola and graduated from the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, the Royal Conservatory of Flanders in Antwerp, and obtained his diploma from the Chapelle Musicale Reine Elisabeth. He is the first prize winner of the Liège International Violin and Viola Competition (Belgium). As a chamber musician, Máté has worked with musicians such as Janine Jansen and Frank-Peter Zimmermann. In addition to performing as a soloist with the Berlin Philharmonic, he has performed with orchestras such as the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of Flanders, the Bamberg Symphony, and the German Chamber Philharmonic of Bremen, where he was also principal viola. After teaching in Saarbrücken, the Karajan Academy, the Hanns Eisler of Berlin, and the Academy of Music in Budapest, he is professor of viola at the Geneva School of Music (Switzerland).
