Paul Goodwin is known for his historically faithful interpretations of music from all eras, his extensive repertoire, and his interest in contemporary music. He demonstrates a great passion for incorporating the style of the period into the traditional orchestral world and for creating unusual and dynamic programs.He is the artistic director and musical director of the Carmel Bach Festival of California and previously held the position of director of the Academy of Ancient Music, the English Chamber Orchestra, the Basel Chamber Orchestra, the Southwest German Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the Royal College of Music. He has guest-conducted many of the world’s finest orchestras, from the San Francisco Symphony to the Philadelphia Orchestra, the National Orchestra of Spain, the Leipzig Gewandhaus, the BBC Symphony, the National Orchestra of Scotland, and, as far as opera is concerned, the Teatro Real in Madrid and the Royal Danish Opera in Copenhagen.
Paul is passionate about teaching and working with young people of all ages, from musical theater productions for young people to national youth orchestras. He studied with Nicholas Harnoncourt in Salzburg, with Jürg Schaeftlein in Vienna, and orchestral conducting with Jorma Panula in Helsinki. For many years he was one of the leading oboists in Europe and has recorded numerous solo albums. He was a professor of baroque oboe at the Royal College of Music and the Royal Academy of Music. He has conducted and mentored many national youth orchestras, such as the National Youth Orchestra of Spain, the Netherlands, Italy, and Germany.
Since the 2021-2022 academic year, he has been a professor of the Société Générale Historical Performance Program at the Reina Sofía School of Music in Madrid.
