Philipp Stubenrauch is one of the most interesting musical personalities on his instrument, the double bass. Raised in the Ruhr region and on the shores of Lake Constance, his studies first took him to Frankfurt am Main, where he studied with Günter Klaus.
He later studied with Franco Petracchi at the Conservatoire de Musique de Genève, where he obtained the Diplôme de Soliste with distinction.
He was subsequently appointed principal solo double bassist of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in Munich. He performs regularly with his orchestra under the baton of renowned conductors such as Mariss Jansons, Zubin Metha, Ricardo Muti and Simon Rattle, and gives concerts all over the world. He has also performed several times as a soloist with his orchestra under the direction of former principal conductor Mariss Jansons. As a sought-after chamber musician, Philipp Stubenrauch is a member of various ensembles such as the Ensemble Clemente and the Piazzolla Ensemble Escualo5. He has collaborated in chamber music with Maria João Pires, Valery Afanassiev, Baiba Skride and Maximilian Hornung.
Together with Wen-Sinn Yang and Hariolf Schlichtig, he recorded a highly acclaimed CD with new chamber music works by Sofia Gubaidulina. Teaching has always played an important role for him. For almost 20 years he has directed the double bass section of the Bavarian State Youth Orchestra and is a professor at the Academy of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. He gives master classes at numerous universities in both Europe and Asia and, from 2010, taught and worked for more than ten years as a professor at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Munich. His students have been successful in international competitions and have obtained positions in prestigious orchestras such as the Munich Philharmonic, the Bavarian State Opera and the Gewandhaus in Leipzig. From the autumn of 2023, Philipp Stubenrauch will take over the professorship for double bass at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Stuttgart.
