Madrid, May 3, 2022.- From May 7 to 28, the Sony Auditorium of the Reina Sofía School of Music will host the thirtieth edition of the concert cycle “21st Century Soloists”. Every Saturday, at 12:00 noon, this cycle can be enjoyed, free of charge until full capacity is reached, in the Sony Auditorium of the Reina Sofía School, and all its concerts will be broadcast live on Radio Clásica de RNE within the program Los Conciertos de Radio Clásica.
The series opens on May 7 with a performance by violas Noemí Fúnez and Karine Vardanian accompanied by Luis Arias on piano. This recital will begin in the Romanticism of Johannes Brahms, continue with the avant-garde music of the Polish composer and conductor Krzysztof Penderecki, and close with the “Concerto for viola and orchestra (arrangement for viola and piano) op.22 (1953)” by the Soviet composer Revol Bunin, a work rarely performed in Spain and therefore very appealing to the public.
In its second session, on May 14, and thanks to the new Société Générale Historical Interpretation Program, the students of the Reina Sofía School of Music will perform under the Baroque Camerata directed by Paul Goodwin and with the participation of the mezzo soprano Paola Leguizamón. This concert also has the collaboration of Mutua Madrileña within the framework of the 30th anniversary cycle of the Reina Sofía School of Music.
A week later, on May 21, the young O Globo wind quintet, -formed by Ana Ferraz (flute), Fidel Fernández (oboe), Joao Paiva (clarinet), Ángela Martínez (bassoon) and Clara Marimon (horn)-, will offer a little-known version of Dvorák’s quartet “The American”, Ligeti’s six bagatelles for winds, and other works by Nielsen and Taffanel.
And to conclude the cycle, on Saturday, May 28, “21st Century Soloists” will feature a piano recital in which the work “Imatges” by Òscar Colomina, dean of the School, will be performed for the first time in the Sony Auditorium. He composed the piece for the “José Iturbi International Piano Competition”, and it will be interpreted by the pianist Juan Barahona. In this concert, pieces by Chopin, Debussy, Albéniz, Ravel and Granados interpreted by Nicolás Bordouncle can also be enjoyed.
