The Reina Sofía School Launches an Ambitious Expansion Project

Madrid, December 16, 2022.- The Reina Sofía School of Music, a center for advanced professional training that has been established for years as one of the best in Europe, has launched an ambitious expansion plan with the signing of the free transfer, by the INAEM, an agency of the Ministry of Culture and Sports, of the building on Calle Requena 3-5, adjacent to its current facilities in Madrid, for a period of fifty years. The event was presided over by Joan Francesc Marco, general director of INAEM, and Paloma O’Shea, founding president of the Reina Sofía School of Music.

The new building will become a place of reference and meeting point between music and society in Madrid. With more than 4,500 square meters, and located in the Plaza de Oriente in Madrid, next to the Teatro Real and the Royal Palace, it will allow the School to expand its activities and increase its educational and artistic offer, in compliance with the needs required by the Degree in Higher Artistic Music Education, which the School teaches.

The Reina Sofía School of Music, the main program of the Albéniz Foundation -a non-profit organization to promote music and musical education-, began its journey in 1991 by Paloma O’Shea in garages in Pozuelo de Alarcón (Madrid). The growth it experienced led to its transfer in 2008 to its current headquarters, on Calle Requena 1, which, now, thanks to the new building, will be expanded to the building at Requena 3-5. This growth will significantly increase the School’s infrastructure with the creation of a new auditorium, multi-purpose rooms, more classrooms and rehearsal booths, a cafeteria for students, and rest and training areas. To this end, a major renovation of the building will be carried out, with the aim of creating a modern and functional space marked by new technologies and sustainability, and harmoniously integrated into the architectural environment in which it is located.
