Madrid, June 21, 2021.-

The Reina Sofia School of Music, the main program of the Albéniz Foundation, and the International University of La Rioja (UNIR) are launching the University Expert Title in Musical Appreciation, which will provide its students with the knowledge and experiences to better understand and appreciate the main musical styles.

This was announced during the signing of a collaboration agreement by the president of the Reina Sofía School and the Albéniz Foundation, Paloma O’Shea, and the rector of UNIR, José María Vázquez García-Peñuela.

The rector of UNIR pointed out that “the musical facet often presents a gap in the training of many people, including, unfortunately, at least in Spain, those who have a university degree. With this initiative, for which UNIR has the collaboration of an internationally renowned center of excellence such as the Reina Sofía School of Music, I think that we will make a very valuable contribution to all those people who realize that they are missing something important in their lives, such as the enjoyment of the great works in the musical history of Humanity.”

The University Expert Title in Musical Appreciation will allow students to form a musical base and better understand the musical varieties of classical, opera, jazz, rock/pop/folk, flamenco, and contemporary music. The goal is for students to acquire or increase their ability to appreciate and enjoy music.

The program will be taught by professionals of recognized prestige in the musical field, who will break down the contents into four subjects.

The first, entitled ‘Appreciating the styles, colors, and forms of music’, has Álvaro Guibert, director of External Relations of the Reina Sofía School of Music and director and presenter of specialized programs on the Radio Clásica station of Radio Nacional de España, as its professor.

The pianist Irene de Juan, director and presenter of programs on Radio Clásica (RNE), will be the professor of the second subject, called ‘Appreciating opera and music for the stage’; and the performer, composer, and popularizer Fernando Palacios will teach the third, ‘Appreciating the music of today’.

Finally, as a professor of the subject ‘Appreciating music by making it’, the composer, pedagogue, and ethnomusicologist Polo Vallejo will approach it in a practical and “sensory” way and lead students to music from praxis.

In addition, this University Expert Title will feature guest professors, such as the tenor Aquiles Machado; Elda Matamoros, teacher of the National Ballet of Spain; the Gregorianist Juan Carlos Asensio or the jazz musician Moisés Sánchez, among other composers and performers who will delve into the different areas of knowledge and bring their professional experience closer to the students.

The title will last 16 weeks. Aimed at anyone who loves music, it does not require prior musical training to take it.
