VIEUXTEMPS, Henry
Concerto for Violin and Orchestra No. 4 in D minor, Op. 31 (reduction for violin and piano)
I. Andante
Christoph Poppen, guest professor
Jennifer Panebianco Del Mónaco, student
Ricardo Alí Álvarez, accompanying pianist
After the student plays the first movement of the Concerto, they work mainly on the sound. Poppen explains that the way of holding the bow influences the sound and will adapt to the repertoire we play. Furthermore, more point of contact is necessary, even in piano dynamics. In the bow change, the bow must remain straight, without additional movement.
The professor then changes some fingerings in high notes and indicates that the fingers of the left hand are too straight, which negatively influences the sound; they must be rounded.
They work in detail on certain position changes to find the best fingering. Finally, Poppen points out that in chords that are very on the string, one must play more parallel to the bridge.
