XX Encounter of Music and Academy of Santander
From 2 to 29 July, more than 50 young musicians from all around Europe and 11 prestigious professors met in Santander to take part in the 20th edition of the Encounter of Santander. For a month, they worked in the classroom and shared the stage under a programme that covered, as always, a wide international repertoire. The Encounter celebrated its 20th anniversary and counted with a special anniversary concert on 20 July and the world premiere on 24 July of composer Harrison Birtwistle's work An Old Man Asleep, composed for the occasion. Furthermore, since the Encounter couldn't take place the previous year due to the pandemic, a year that celebrated Beethoven's 200th anniversary, the German composer's work had a prominent position in the programming.
Throughout July 50 concerts took place in the Argenta and Pereda Halls at the Palacio de Festivales de Cantabria, the Palacio de la Magdalena-Universidad Internacional Menéndez Pelayo, along with 22 other towns of the region and the Burgos Cathedral.
The faculty was formed by Zakhar Bron (violin), Máté Szücs (viola), Miklós Perényi (cello), Dominik Wollenweber (oboe), François Benda (clarinet) Felix Renggli (flute), Radovan Vlatković (French Horn), John Graham-Hall (voice), Claudio Martínez Mehner and Galina Eguiazarova (piano) and Péter Csaba (orchestra).
