PROKOFIEV, Sergey
5 Melodies for Violin and Piano, Op. 35bis
2. Lento, ma non troppo
Miriam Fried, guest professor
Joaquín Arias Fernández, student
Vadim Gladkov, accompanying pianist
After some general comments on expressiveness, Miriam Fried raises a question about the character of this second piece and comments on the importance of the piano accompaniment in its definition. In general, there should be one sound for the accompaniment and another for a main idea with different characters. Afterwards, they discuss arm movement to play the pizzicato correctly.
Fried also suggests playing with more colors. This is achieved with five factors related to the bow: speed, weight, contact point, amount of air, and vibrato.
Finally, the professor addresses some phrasing issues and generally suggests that the student play by changing the speed of the bow more to generate more contrast and expressiveness.
