Rien de Reede: Ibert – Flute concerto – II. Andante

Course
2011-12

IBERT, Jacques

Concerto for flute and orchestra (reduction for flute and piano)

II. Andante

Rien de Reede, guest professor

Tiago Meira, student

Cameron Roberts, accompanying pianist

At the beginning, Professor De Reede interrupts the student to give him some indications about the vibrato with which he has played the first phrase of the Andante: there should not be so much fluctuation of the air, but rather it should be kept more regular so that the vibration is not excessive. To this end, he shares advice from the flautist Geoffrey Gilbert to improve the stability of the sound. After a correction on phrasing, Rien de Reede makes indications of dynamics and colors in relation to the acoustics of the hall where he is going to play: it is advisable to move the air faster and make it richer in sound.
The professor continues working on the control of the air and the sound to make it richer, and suggests placing the mouth as if singing it for a certain note. Later, he points out a passage where the composer changes the meter, which means that the F should be less intense than the D flat, and for the “Animando un poco” part, he should use his breathing to help.
In conclusion, De Reede comments that special attention should be paid to the notes played on the flute with the left hand, and they work on trying to make the sound produced have the same color, taking care of the position with the flute. He reflects with the rest of the students about the quality, color, and production of a good sound.
