Poppen’s first general indication to the student is that he should not move the viola while playing, and that in this movement the tempo should be faster. She also advises accentuating the difference when playing in a major and a minor key.
Prof. Poppen also makes indications about the direction of the bow and recommends moving it faster. The bass has to be heard more, and he has to have more fun with the small legati: the character of this Giga is very cheerful, so she recommends the student enjoy it more. She corrects some phrasing and accent issues and advises at a certain point that it is not necessary to change position, he can play in 1st position.
Regarding the bow, the student must take care that the wood of the bow does not touch the string so much and that the hairs are sufficiently tense, and they practice it bow up.
The end of the movement has to be bigger as it is the end of the whole work. To conclude, the student repeats the interpretation (without repetitions) and the professor makes some more suggestions about the dynamics of the end, about fingerings to improve intonation, and briefly advises certain exercises to improve the strength in the 4th finger.
