Frans Helmerson: Britten – Cello Sonata, Op. 65 – IV. Marcia

Course
2010-11

BRITTEN, Benjamin

Sonata for Cello and Piano in C Major, Op. 65

IV. Marcia. Energico

Frans Helmerson, visiting professor

Ferran Bardolet, student

Miguel Ángel Ortega Chavaldas, accompanying pianist

Regarding this March, the professor indicates that the beginning has sforzato and is forte. With respect to the vibrato, Helmerson suggests not doing too much and not being late afterwards. Later, the professor and student work on the position of the left arm: the elbow should not be too low; it is better if it is maintained in the same position for all the strings. For the double-string passage, it is advisable not to leave the wrist loose. To conclude, Helmerson explains a way to play the harmonics: move the bow faster and without stopping the sound of the last note.
