At the beginning of the class, Professor Saksala comments on several changes that the composer introduced after the publication of the score. Then he plays some passages from the
Saksala also explains that there are two types of string changes, fast and slow: the slow one comes from the shoulder and the fast one from the forearm (which requires rotation of the elbow). They work both types of changes very slowly so that the student assimilates each movement of his body.
Later, Saksala makes comments about Nino Rota. He suggests that the student maintain a correct head position when playing and proposes fingering changes in several passages and different bows to help him improve his interpretation. He also indicates the appropriate moments to use martélé and how to carry it out.
Janne Saksala writes annotations on the score to indicate certain slurs, syncopations and articulations. Finally, he points out that the energy should be well distributed from the beginning to the end of the piece.
