Serenade for string orchestra in C major op. 48

I. Pezzo in forma di sonatina

Yehudi Menuhin, guest conductor

Freixenet Chamber Orchestra of the Reina Sofía School of Music

This recording represents an unparalleled historical document about the figure of Yehudi Menuhin. In this rehearsal from 1997, two years before his death, Maestro Menuhin congratulates the orchestra on its magnificent sound, corrects issues of rhythm and dynamics, and commentson how to articulate certain notes to give the appropriate expression. It is necessary to phrase with greater directionality, and sometimes accompanied by a small accelerando. Balanced use of rubato. The first notes in cellos and double basses in the ascending phrase must be retained. Division of the phrasing into a structure of notes 2+2+3, and it has to be played in violins with more fantasy. They work on several passages of phrasing separately. Just because a sound is long does not mean it is played early. Menuhin makes frequent corrections on the direction of the bow to adapt it to the phrasing.
