Three Winning Projects in the First EDP Green Stage Call

Madrid, February 19, 2025.- With the aim of promoting dialogue between Art and Sustainability, Fundación EDP and the Reina Sofía School of Music have launched the EDP GREEN STAGE project, an initiative that seeks to support performing arts projects that address, in a creative and original way, themes related to raising awareness about the environmental problems facing our society.

Last November, the call for proposals was opened. Among the more than twenty projects received, a jury made up of representatives from the EDP Foundation, the Reina Sofía School, and public and private cultural managers and programmers, has chosen three winning projects: “El Mar, la Mar” by Clara Montes, “Canto al Amazonas” by Nilo Verano, which will be presented at the I EDP GREEN STAGE Conference on March 19, 2025, and “Whisky en Kepler” by Hermanos Ferrando which, requiring a more extensive production process, will be presented at the II EDP GREEN STAGE Conference in 2026.

The I EDP GREEN STAGE Conference on Art and Sustainability will be held on Wednesday, March 19 at 6:30 p.m. in the Sony Auditorium of the Reina Sofía School, and will take place in two parts.

It will begin with the panel discussion, “Challenges and opportunities for artists in a sustainable world”, where recognized experts in the art and sustainability sectors will discuss how artists can be agents of change in building a more sustainable future. The speakers, moderated by Pablo Maroño, will be:

  • Ana Álvarez, Director of Environmental Development at EDP Spain

  • Paloma Orte, Head of Sustainability for the Last Tour group

  • Fátima Sánchez, Director of the Botín Center

  • Gonzalo Cabrera, General Director of Culture and Creative Industries of the Community of Madrid

After the panel discussion, the stage of the Sony Auditorium will host the premiere presentation of two of the winning projects: “El Mar, la Mar”, by Clara Montes and “Canto al Amazonas”, by Nilo Verano.

The conference is free, and invitations can be downloaded from March 10 at www.escuelasuperiordemusicareinasofia.es

El Mar, la Mar: A musical and poetic proposal that aspires to raise awareness among the general public of the need to care for and protect the planet’s seas and oceans. The show creates a synergy between the latest work of the singer and composer Clara Montes, a tribute to the collection of poems “Marinero en Tierra” by Rafael Alberti, which in 2025 celebrates its 100th anniversary, with the transmission of values of sustainability and protection of nature. In addition to Clara Montes, Chamo Díaz participates on piano, Kiriko Gutiérrez to double bass and Malick MB on percussion.

Canto al Amazonas. A project by the Colombian artist Nilo Verano that celebrates the richness of the Amazon combining sound and visual art and raising awareness about the dangers facing this vital ecosystem. Nilo’s voice merges with Latin folklore and jazz, transmitting respect and admiration for the wisdom of the peoples of the Amazon region, the guardians of Mother Earth. Several musicians from Berklee Valencia also participate in the show: guitar, cello, flute, drums and percussion.

Whisky en Kepler: Refugees in space. It is a chamber opera by Hermanos Ferrando with electronic music that focuses on the species’ need to look for other planets where to survive. We will live the adventure of the first human being in Kepler, where he must demonstrate his humanity. The work is a satire that uses humor and exaggeration to captivate the public and, with that tone, expose us in front of the mirror as a species capable of achieving great technological and scientific achievements but incapable of cooperating and keeping its planet safe.
