Guilherme Tomás

Born in Portugal, in 2003. Since 2022, he studies at the Reina Sofía School of Music’s Fundación BBVA Viola Chair with professor Nobuko Imai. He has been granted scholarships by Fundación EDP and Fundación Albéniz.

After beginning his music studies with violin at the Escuela de Música Artística in the National Conservatory of Lisbon, at the age of fifteen, he decided to switch to viola, under the guidance of professor Samuel Barsegian. He pursued his studies at the Metropolitana Professional School.

He has attended masterclasses by professors such as Aida Carmen-Soanea, Alexander Zemtsov, Anna-Kreetta Gribajcevic, Diemut Poppen, Marc Sabbah, Máté Szücs, Nobuko Imai, Paul Wakabayashi, Timothy Ridout, and Heinz Holliger (chamber music). He was also selected to play in the final orchestra concert of the 2021 Mendelssohn Summer School. In 2023, he was awarded the first prize at the 12th Corda Cidade de Vigo Competition and at the 3rd International Artists Competition in Vienna.

During his studies, he has played in several school orchestras, including the National Conservatory Symphony Orchestra and the Classical Metropolitan Orchestra. In 2020 he was admitted into the Portuguese Youth Orchestra, member of the European Federation of National Youth Orchestras and invited to perform with the Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra.

As a student of the School, he has been a member of the Freixenet Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Andrés Orozco-Estrada, Juanjo Mena and Péter Csaba; the Fundación EDP Camerata, conducted by Christoph Poppen, and that of the Sinfonietta, conducted by Zsolt Nagy. He is currently part of the Kegelstatt Trio.
