Philipp Stubenrauch

Philipp Stubenrauch is one of the most interesting musical personalities in his instrument, the double bass. Growing up in the Ruhr area and on Lake Constance, his studies first took him to Frankfurt am Main, where he studied with Günter Klaus.
He subsequently studied with Franco Petracchi at the Conservatoire de Musique de Genève, where he completed his Diplôme de Soliste with distinction.
He was later appointed as first solo double bassist of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in Munich. He regularly performs with his orchestra under renowned conductors such as Mariss Jansons, Zubin Metha, Ricardo Muti and Simon Rattle and plays concerts all over the world. He has also appeared several times as a soloist with his orchestra under the direction of former chief conductor Mariss Jansons. As a sought-after chamber musician, Philipp Stubenrauch is a member of various ensembles such as the Ensemble Clemente and the Piazzolla Ensemble Escualo5. His chamber music partners included Maria João Pires, Valery Afanassiev, Baiba Skride and Maximilian Hornung. Together with Wen-Sinn Yang and Hariolf Schlichtig, he recorded a highly acclaimed CD with new chamber music works by Sofia Gubaidulina. Teaching has always played a major role for him. He has been coaching the double bass group of the Bavarian State Youth Orchestra for almost 20 years and is a lecturer at the Academy of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. He gives masterclasses at many universities in both Europe and Asia and, from 2010 onwards, taught and worked for over ten years as a professor at the Munich University of Music and Theatre. His students have been successful in international competitions and have won positions in prestigious orchestras such as the Munich Philharmonic, the Bavarian State Opera, and the Leipzig Gewandhaus. From autumn 2023, Philipp Stubenrauch will take over the professorship for double bass at the Stuttgart University of Music and Performing Arts.
