Encounter of Santander
She began her musical studies as a violinist in the Youth and Children’s Orchestra System of Venezuela (El Sistema) in her hometown of Coro, becoming a concert performer and making her debut with the Venezuelan Symphony Orchestra in Caracas. She later began vocal training with Rosita del Castillo and made her operatic debut as Ortlinde in Die Walküre.
In 1998, she moved to Spain on a scholarship to pursue advanced studies at the Reina Sofía School of Music in Madrid, where she studied with maestros Alfredo Kraus and Teresa Berganza. In 2001, she made her debut as Fiordiligi in Così fan tutte at the Palacio de Festivales de Santander and at the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid.
During the early years of her career, she performed Stabat Mater by Pergolesi with Teresa Berganza, sang the role of Clarice in Haydn’s Il Mondo della Luna at the Teatre Lliure in Barcelona, and portrayed Salud in La vida breve by Manuel de Falla with the Orchestre National de Lorraine. She also performed the title role in Suor Angelica, Elisabetta di Valois in Don Carlo (Frankfurt and Berlin), Margherita in Mefistofele (Valencia), and Aida, which she sang in Madrid, Segovia, Athens, Seattle (under Riccardo Frizza), and Naples (under Nicola Luisotti).
In Italy, in addition to La Scala in Milan, she made her debut at the Arena di Verona (Aida and the role of Abigaille in Nabucco), in Naples (I Masnadieri), and in Salerno (Norma), earning both critical acclaim and public recognition.
She captured the attention of the international opera world with a last-minute replacement performance as Odabella in Attila at Teatro alla Scala in Milan in 2011.
