Justin Way’s productions include The Beggar’s Opera (ROH, Linbury Theatre), Alcina (Opera Australia, Sydney Opera House), Carmen (Canadian Opera Company), La traviata (Central City Opera), Semele, Dardanus, Fairy Queen (Pinchgut Opera, Sydney), Die Entfuhrung aus dem Serail, Orlando, Giasone (Chicago Opera Theatre), La bohème (Minnesota Opera Company), Don Giovanni (Pittsburgh Opera), La Clemenza di Tito (Taiwan National Opera), Die Zauberflöte (Singapore Lyric Opera), Cosi fan Tutte (Yale Opera)
For the BBC Proms he has directed semi-stagings of Der Ring (Barenboim), Parsifal (Elder), Tannhauser and Salome (Runnicles); and Elektra (Bychkov) at the Royal Albert Hall and Le Grand Macabre at the Barbican.
As a revival director he has directed productions at the Vienna State Opera, Opéra National de Paris; Teatro Real, Madrid, Grande Théatre de Genève, Gran Teatre del Liceu, Barcelona; Teatro Reggio di Torino; Washington National Opera; Seoul Arts Centre and Covent Garden.
For 15 years he was resident staff director at ROH Covent Garden, and for 4 years Head of Staff Directors Department. New productions to ROH on which we he was Assistant Director included Herzog Blaubarts Burg/Erwartung (Decker), Wozzeck, Der Ring des Nibelungen (Warner), Ariadne auf Naxos, Lulu, Tristan und Isolde (Loy), Le nozze di Figaro, Faust, Rigoletto, Adriana Lecouvreur, Les Troyens, Salome (McVicar), Carmen, Don Giovanni, Pikovaya Dama, Cherevichki (Zambello), Cendrillon, Robert le Diable (Pelly), La Cenerentola, Il turco in Italia, Madama Butterfly, Hamlet (Leiser and Caurier), Il trittico, Gloriana (Jones), Falstaff (Vick), Pelleas et Melisande (Nordey), I Pagliacci (Zeffirelli), Eugene Onegin (Holten), The Tsar’s Bride (Curran), Le coq d’or (Hopkins), Il barbiere di Siviglia (Lowery), Il trovatore (Moshinsky) and the world premiere of The Tempest (Cairns), as well as revivals of Tosca, La bohéme, Otello, Der fliegender Holländer, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Parsifal, and Les Contes de Hoffmann amongst others. He also assisted at The Australian Opera, English Touring Opera, The Rome Opera and the Bregenz Festival.
Currently he is Director of Productions at the Teatro Real, Madrid.
