Hugo Domínguez Fernández

Born in Madrid, Spain, in 2008. Since 2022, he studies at the Reina Sofía School of Music’s Aline Foriel-Destezet Cello Chair with professor Ivan Monighetti. He has been granted scholarships by Consejería de Educación, Universidades y Ciencia de la Comunidad de Madrid and Fundación Albéniz. He plays a Virgilio Capellini cello, loaned as an instrument scholarship by Fundación Albéniz, Fundación Málaga and the International Institute of Chamber music of Madrid.

He began his cello studies at the age of five with Lucia Diez and when he was eight, he entered the Arturo Soria Conservatory in Madrid, where he studied with a scholarship for five years and was the most outstanding student. In 2018 he studied with Maria de Macedo, and during the two years later, he studied at the Katarina Gurska Music School in Madrid with professor Michal Dmochowski. Since 2020, he studies with professor Mikolaj Konopelski. He has completed his studies with courses and masterclasses by Pablo Ferrández, Ray Chen, Sir András Schiff, Andrés Salado, Arantxa López, Frans Helmerson, and Krzysztof Chorzelski and Josep Puchades (chamber music).
In 2020 he was awarded first prize at the Region of Madrid Intercentros Melómano Competition and second prize at the Jaime Dobato Benavente Promising Young Cello Players Competition. In 2021 he was awarded first prize at the Arturo Soria Conservatory Soloist Competition, second prize at the Medici International Music Competition and third prize at the International Moscow Music Competition. In 2022 he was selected for the Royal Concertgebouw Youth Orchestra in Amsterdam.

He has performed in several concerts in venues such as Het Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, and Auditorio Nacional in Madrid, among others.

As a student of the School, he has performed with the Freixenet Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Andrés Orozco-Estrada, Juanjo Mena and Péter Csaba, and the Freixenet Chamber Orchestra, conducted by András Schiff and Andrés Salado. He is currently part of the Ramales Quartet.
