Encounter of Santander
Lucas Macías Navarro studied at the Zurich Conservatory (Switzerland) under the guidance of Thomas Indermühle. As a member of the Spanish National Youth Orchestra, he continued his training at the Freiburg Conservatory (Germany) between 1997 and 2000, where he earned the prestigious “Soloist Diploma” in Heinz Holliger’s class.
Throughout his career, he has performed as a soloist at renowned international festivals and events, including the Berliner Festwochen, the Usedomer Festival, Young Artists in Concert in Davos (Switzerland), the Europäischen Musikmonat in Basel (Switzerland), the ARD Kammermusikfest 2003 in Munich, the Albert Concerts in Freiburg (Germany), the Schwetzinger Musikfestival 2004, Roque d'Anthéron (2004), and the BBC Proms in London. He also studied at the Karajan Academy of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra during 2003 and 2004.
Since March 2004, he has held the position of Principal Oboe with the Munich Chamber Orchestra (Germany), a role he has combined since July 2005 with the same position in the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra (Switzerland). In December 2007, he was appointed Principal Oboe of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam under the direction of Mariss Jansons.
In 2014, Macías Navarro began his career as a conductor with a notable debut at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, establishing himself as one of the world’s leading oboists. In 2018, he was named principal conductor of the Oviedo Filarmonía Orchestra. His debut at the Ópera de Oviedo took place in October 2021 with Mozart’s The Magic Flute.
As a soloist, he has worked with the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra under the baton of Claudio Abbado, Seiji Ozawa, and Pierre Boulez, and has held the same position in other distinguished ensembles, including Camerata Bern (Switzerland), the SWR Symphony Orchestra of Baden-Baden and Freiburg (Germany), the Winterthur City Orchestra (Switzerland), the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra (Hessischer Rundfunk), the Bochum Symphony Orchestra, the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra under Christian Zacharias, the Budapest Festival Orchestra under Iván Fischer, the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia (Italy), and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. He has also toured as Principal Oboe with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe and was invited by Claudio Abbado to join his new ensemble, the “Mozart Orchestra,” as Principal Oboe.
As a conductor, he has worked with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne, the Orchestre de Paris (where he served as assistant conductor for two years, working closely with Daniel Harding), the Orchestre de Chambre de Genève, the Staatskapelle Dresden, the Buenos Aires Philharmonic, Het Gelders Orkest, the Galicia Symphony Orchestra, and the Basque National Orchestra, among other prestigious ensembles.
In September 2020, he was appointed conductor of the Orquesta Ciudad de Granada.
Throughout his career, Macías Navarro has received numerous awards, including First Prize at the National Competition for Young Performers (Granada), Honorable Mention at the Fernand Gillet Oboe Competition (USA), First Prize at the II Giuseppe Tomassini International Oboe Competition (Petritoli, Italy), and both First Prize and the Mozart Prize at the International Oboe Competition in Japan in 2006.
Since the 2025–2026 academic year, he is Professor of the Fundación Damm Oboe Chair at the Reina Sofía School of Music in Madrid.
