Noon Suite

The Reina Sofía School of Music, in collaboration with Radio Clásica, continues with a new edition of the 21st Century Soloists concert series, the central axis of the Noon Suite experience. On Saturdays 10, 17, 24, and 31 May, it will offer the public the opportunity to attend a series of themed concerts, take part in guided tours of the School, and meet the participating musicians.

During the series, the following concerts and activities will take place:

Violin Concert, 10 May – Allemande: Virtuosity that Inspires: the violin takes centre stage in this first event, with a programme that uses melody as a springboard to challenge the performer’s technical skills while also serving as a natural channel for emotional expression.

Clarinet and Bassoon Concert, 17 May – Courante: Tributes and Dreams: the clarinet and bassoon are the protagonists of this evening with a programme that travels from the classical heritage of early works by Beethoven and Glinka, to the expressive and technical boldness of Widmann and Kovács. As an example of contemporary composition, we will hear a piece for solo bassoon by Andrés Felipe Poveda, a student of the Inditex Composition Chair.

Double Bass Concert, 24 May – Sarabande: in this programme, the double bass steps out of its traditional role to reveal itself as a vehicle for agility, lyricism, and depth. Central to this journey is Giovanni Bottesini, whose work will be accompanied by pieces by Desenclos, Koussevitzky, and a transcription of a Rachmaninoff song by student Nuno Coroado.

Contemporary Piano Concert, 31 May – Gigue: the delicacy of Fauré and Ravel, the introspection of Eötvös and Levinas, and the playful and ironic side of Boulez and Shostakovich animate the colourful timbral palette of the piano in this concert, where the instrument becomes a laboratory of resonances, densities, and novel and evocative gestures.
