Historic recording from the masterclass series devoted to Isaac Albéniz’s Suite Iberia, taught by the great pianist Alicia de Larrocha at the Granados-Marshall Academy in Barcelona. In this lesson, focused on Triana, Larrocha works in detail on dynamics, stressing the importance of respecting the score’s indications: the study of the work’s character is part of the interpretation.

She carefully revisits certain passages with the student to improve phrasing and the relationship between sound and movement, offering guidance on accents and attacks. In addition, Alicia de Larrocha highlights the importance of not losing the harmonic bass. They examine dynamics and rhythm in detail—without neglecting the dolce and cantabile character in some moments, nor the inner pulse despite the work’s flexibility.

For the professor, what matters most is that once the student has gained a deeper understanding of these internal aspects, they can then move from detail to the whole, achieving a spontaneous interpretation that still conveys Albéniz’s line, concept, and character with rigor.
