Franco Petracchi: Bottenisi - Elegy no. 1 (double bass and piano red.)

BOTTESINI, Giovanni

Elegy no. 1 for double bass and strings in D major (double bass and piano reduction)

Franco Petracchi, guest professor

Emilio Yepes, student

Jesús Gómez Madrigal, accompanying pianist

Masterclass with Maestro Franco Petracchi, in which he speaks about Bottesini and his intention in composing this work—to evoke his hometown, with mixed feelings. The professor then performs the piece himself while giving the student interpretative and technical indications.
Returning to the beginning with the student, Petracchi focuses mainly on issues of character, sound, intonation, and fingerings. He also suggests playing a certain passage with more vibrato and comments on how to extend the fingerboard. He continues with remarks on dynamics and emphasizes the importance of being logical when choosing fingerings, proposing more suitable ones for specific passages. In addition, he gives the student advice regarding articulation and phrasing in certain moments of the Elegy.
