SCHUBERT, Franz
Sonata for arpeggione and piano in A minor D 821 'Arpeggione' (version for cello and piano)
I. Allegro moderato
Sol Gabetta, guest professor
Maria Salvatori, student
Ofelia Montalván, accompanying pianist
After the student's performance of part of the first movement, Sol Gabetta tells her that while it's good to play with freedom, there must also be structure, especially at the beginning. In fact, her entrance is not really the start of the piece. She must pick up the melody from the piano, which actually opens the work.
Returning to the beginning of the Arpeggione Sonata, the professor gives guidance on improving phrasing by paying attention to the underlying harmonies. To support this, she suggests using the left hand more physically, playing with greater support. Gabetta also offers comments on articulation, dynamics, sound quality, and recommends playing the harmonic sul ponticello. They also address agogics, expressive accents, bowings, and fingerings—especially in response to questions the student raises about technical challenges in certain passages.
