BRAHMS, Johannes
Sonata for viola and piano in F minor op. 120 no. 1
III. Allegretto grazioso
Gérard Caussé, guest professor
Martina Bonaldo, student
Antonia Valente, accompanying pianist
During a part of the third movement of Brahms' Viola Sonata No. 1, Caussé stops the student to point out that, because of the syncopated rhythm between her and the piano, she must play very clearly and strictly to stay in sync. He also asks her to use more bow and maintain stronger contact with the string, as it is Brahms. Additionally, since the movement resembles a waltz, it should be performed with the appropriate rhythmic feel.
He emphasizes the importance of adapting to the acoustics of the concert hall—it is not a small classroom. To help with this, besides closing the piano lid, the violist needs to articulate more clearly so the sound projects properly. Caussé then offers comments on phrasing and bow distribution for a particular passage. They also review fingerings at certain points to achieve better sound and intonation, as well as work on coordination with the piano and other musical aspects.
