ENESCU, George
Concert piece for viola and piano
Gérard Caussé, guest professor
Adriana Julio Sáiz, student
Antonia Valente, accompanying pianist
After the student's full performance of the piece, the professor congratulates her and comments on certain fingering choices. Since the school has the original manuscript, he recommends she consult it for these kinds of details. They begin reviewing the piece together from the beginning, going over aspects such as maintaining the color in the first phrase (by playing all the notes with vibrato, not just the initial ones), details of rhythm, bowings and bow distribution, dynamics, vibrato, bow direction according to phrasing, articulations, and more.
For a particular passage, Caussé suggests she play without moving her wrist or elbow—keeping the joints steady to create a kind of atmosphere with a rough and grainy texture, so characteristic of composers of that period, with an almost Eastern quality. In the following fast, ascending passage, he asks her to make the articulation shorter to give the impression of a quick lift-off. Additionally, the attack should be more immediate, with a faster entry—executed by the hand, not led by the head.
