STAMITZ, Carl
Concerto for viola and orchestra no. 1 in D major (viola and piano reduction)
I. Allegro (non troppo)
Gérard Caussé, guest professor
Martina Bonaldo, student
Antonia Valente, accompanying pianist
The professor congratulates the student on her performance, noting that although she played at a very fast tempo, it worked well, which shows she knows the piece thoroughly.
He explains that it’s important to keep in mind the rules typically applied in competitions or auditions when performing this concerto. The first rule concerns dynamics: always start piano, then move to mezzoforte, and finally forte. Since the passage is repeated three times, it must be clearly structured that way each time. In terms of articulation, it’s important to emphasize the notes D, F, A, and D.
Caussé also comments that a certain passage sounds more consistent when played on two strings rather than three, as the student currently does. Finally, he offers a small piece of advice: not to let the viola drop too low, but rather to hold it higher to create more resistance when applying pressure with the bow.
