SAINT-SAËNS, Camille
Concerto for cello and orchestra no. 1 in A minor op. 33 (cello and piano reduction)
I. Allegro non troppo
Pablo Ferrández, guest professor
Hugo Domínguez, student
Ofelia Montalván, accompanying pianist
For the beginning of the first movement, the teacher recommends being on the string beforehand so that the attack is more prepared and thus the sound is cleaner. All notes must sound correctly and be well-defined, and for this, the student must play with maximum intention, taking care of the sound endings, articulation, expression, musical phrasing, etc. Ferrández also recommends playing with the quantity and area of the bow used, carefully considering what to do. All notes must be well connected and have a beautiful sound. The student must listen attentively to himself and to the piano chords to play taking those harmonies into account. By applying this working methodology, his level can improve significantly.
