DEBUSSY, Claude
Première rapsodie for clarinet and piano
Pascal Moraguès, professor
João Paiva, student
Patricia Araúzo Rodríguez, accompanying pianist
Pascal Moraguès begins the masterclass talking about the fitting of the reed in the student's instrument to adapt it for the hall acoustics in a better way and to get more projection in forte dynamics.
Regarding the Rhapsody, the student must pay more attention to the sound and the rapport with the piano. They work the tuning for some intervals and the pressure to apply. It is very important the appropriate use of the air column to get the right phrasing: maintaining the pressure with the diaphragm to keep the air until the end of the phrase. For the high notes, the professor suggests thinking about the general phrasing with more freedom (using more pressure and less tongue). Then, they talk about keys and fingers to hold the tuning even in diminuendo.
Besides, Moraguès makes other recommendations: to pronounce better the notes to get more sound stability, to be steady in the tempo, to subdivide trills and thirty-second notes to fit them in the pulse perfectly and to correct the tuning for the last high notes.
