DEBUSSY, Claude
Sonata for cello and piano CD 144
II. Sérénade
Sol Gabetta, guest professor
Guillem Gràcia Soler, student
Miguel Ángel Ortega Chavaldas, accompanying pianist
For the 2nd movement, Gabetta gives the student advice on how to make the opening pizzicati more expressive—they need to be heard, but as if they were gradually becoming more corporeal. They discuss details related to sound quality and character (which should be more playful at a certain point), resonance, ways of approaching specific notes, and agogic nuances.
To finish, they review the phrasing of the long notes at the end of the movement.
