Prof. Poppen reviews the opening notes for violas and cellos to make it more tender and elegant. Afterwards, he gives some indications to the strings about articulation.
For certain moments, Poppen also checks dynamics: the orchestra should sound enthusiastic, recommending playing with bow speed but not too loud, without making too much crescendo. Besides, the strings should play to get a more open sound.
They work on the tuning of the winds in measure 67, and the spiccato of the strings later on.
